Meeting a Stranger
-
She doesn’t seem to like our smile. It probably looks suspicious or maybe she’s shy. We ask her if we can take her photo. She abruptly declines with a sharp, abrupt movement of her arm. She has no second thoughts about it. Pity, as she’s a beautiful, old lady. We met her near the church of San Cresci. She was sitting there in the cool, early spring sunshine in a black dress, black stockings, with dark wrinkles on her proud, motionless face. She stood there like an old woman now confined to a reserve, almost as if the changes of her countryside with elegantly renovated farmhouses, sophisticated shops and everything else had forced her to withdraw indignantly into her small, safe world, her house and the church. Both had always been there with her and her family: the former and the latter. The woman repeated her unfriendly gestures then pulled herself up moving towards the door of her truly peasant house, vanishing into her simple black and white life.
