Piero Antinori does not own a castle or a villa in the Chianti. However, belonging to a noble family, he has inherited one of the most beautiful palaces of Florence. It is one of those buildings with essential outlines, not allowing for any changes or stylistic additions, a palace where symmetry is felt as an interior necessity rather than an architectural concept or a preference. It expresses the need for order and rationality. It goes without saying that Giuliano da Maiano, the architect who designed it, was one of the most elegant interpreters of the Renaissance, one of those geniuses who had begun his career as a very young man. He had probably worked as a craftsman in one of the more sophisticated crafts such as intarsia but changed his profession soon after. In those years, that is, the middle of the Quattrocento, a period of brilliant minds who were writing the new trends in the history of architecture, Giuliano soon absorbed the teaching of Michelozzo and the great theorist Leon Battista Alberti.
One of his first commissions was Palazzo Boni itself. He set to work on it but his patron soon ran out of funds and had to stop the works. Giuliano walked out enraged, leaving the main part of the budding unfinished. In 1506, Niccolo Antinori purchased it and had it completed and extended a few years later by another famous Florentine architect, Baccio d’Agnolo, a close collaborator of Giuliano da Sangallo. Around the middle of the Cinquecento, the Palazzo took on its present-day appearance and became one of the reference models of Tuscan civil architecture. From then on, it also became the prestigious residence of this ancient family and the headquarters of the wine producing firm. Ever since then, the history of Palazzo Antinori and its wines are closely intertwined.
