We know some excellent agritourist farms in the Chianti, run by good friends but it’s not up to us to praise one more than the other, as this is not a travel-guide to give information of the kind. Our aim is to describe impressions, pleasant experiences, encounters. Our meeting Evita Marie Sylvie Haniez and Roberto Melosi, owners of the agritourist farm Podere Terreno, situated on the road to Volpaia, in the municipality of Radda, was a fortunate one. Maybe because all three of us were in a good mood that day, so that the merit goes to the unfathomable and mysterious influence of the stars, or maybe because we were immediately on the same wavelength in our attitude towards life. That is, a direct approach but one full of subtle layers expressed in the way of small attentions.
Without any formality but expressed with delicacy. I received from them the sensation of not being welcomed as a duty but as an expression of their natural vocation for hospitality – something extremely rare not only in the Chianti. Is this an exaggeration? I don’t think so, it is what I really felt in the few hours spent with them after a day which ended with a dinner all around one table in the open air, eating delicious food accompanied by excellent wines produced on their small, select farm.
This is only the story of one encounter, as in the Chianti the civilization of hospitality is well known and Sylvie’s and Roberto’s example is imitated by many other entrepreneurs, open to hospitality. They have all bought a property in the Chianti and have transformed their love for it into a job. But there are also castles, large villas and even privately owned abbeys, like Badia a Coltibuono where they offer a more refined accommodation. There is a vast choice therefore. A room or a small suite in a farmhouse or on a farm offers you more rustic surroundings whereas the more elegant atmosphere of a 16th century villa is a choice for those looking for a more refined setting. A small monk’s cell is more suited to those in search of ‘privations’, accompanied by all the comforts!
