He was a man of passion, capable Of changing his life for a new love and of fighting to the end to defend it. This is not exaggeration. Sergio Manetti was like this. He had a successful industry, a comfortable but maybe a slightly boring life. Then he discovered that the Chianti was the ideal place for spending week-ends in the countryside, as many do prefer the expensive whim of having a house to show off rather than to live in. He bought a large farmhouse which had originally been a fortification and planted two vineyards to produce wine for himself and a few friends. He was so successful that after a few years he gave up his industry and plunged into a new activity which still had to be invented. It was the beginning of the seventies.
Today, those two wines have not remained alone even if the Montevertine firm is stall small, according to Sergio Manetti, who has always aimed at a very high quality and a family-size business. To understand fully where we have stopped, it is enough to mention the three brands that have made this producer famous. Montevertine, Sodaccio and, above all, Le Pergole Torte. These may not mean much to those who are not familiar with wine, but for others, they represent three labels which have long deserved to be at the top of the list of the best Chianti Classico.
