Every Saturday, at the crack of dawn, the vendors of Greve Market crowd the elliptic shaped square and in a twinkling, between a witty crack and a naughty joke, they are ready to show their goods. The empathy and friendliness expressed by that Tuscan wit, the true Tuscan sense of humor, a destructive irony and a taste for a forceful word which does not sound too vulgar but rather becomes a means of arousing immediate consensus, are all natural talents which start from birth here and remain with you forever. Every day this itinerant market moves to various places in the territory: Radda, Castellina, Panzano, Gaiole but the one in Greve is the largest and the most crowded. It is swarming with people, well disposed to buying even useless things, moving from stall to stall in the hope of finding something to buy. It’s not like entering a shop to buy something you already had in mind. The market gives a sense of freedom and pleasure to those who have decided to dedicate a little time to themselves, accompanied by the agreeable and somewhat childish sensation of going to look for something which is waiting for us and will come to meet us but we don’t have a clue what it is.
In the small villages, the market only comes once a week and this is why it is still considered a feast which satisfies all eyes and pockets. The products are very varied. You can go in famished and with nothing on and come out soon afterwards dressed to the hilt, having eaten your fill, washed down with a good glass of Chianti, generously offered in all the bars and wine-cellars.
