Lucignano
-
Lucignano is a small village built at the foot of the Church of Santo Stefano. ln 1164 it was one of the castles given by Frederick Barbarossa to the Counts Alberti di Vernio. The Buondelmonti owned houses in Lucignano from the 13th century and were also patrons of the church, which is first mentioned in a document dated 1073. The building has been radically altered over the centuries: the 18th century sober facade has a 19th century portico while the interior has two side altars made of pietra serena, probably built in the 17th century. One of these, which depicts the Annunciation, was built around a fresco by Cenni di Francesco, a late Gothic painter active at the end of the 14th century. Villa Covoni was built on the castle site in the 19th century and belonged to the Borghese Princes. Its sober neo-Classical style is relieved by the painted decorations on the facades. Just after Lucignano, Brugnano is visible on the left. It is a Medieval village with a tall tower decorated by a 17th century clock. Villa Guicciardini lies on the right. This grand building, known in the past as Il Bosco, belonged to the the 15th century. It passed on to the Guicciardini in the 17th century, but its present architectural characteristics are of the 18th century.
Fattoria di Lucignano belongs to Count Lodovico Guicciardini, a descendant of the famous 16th century Florentine historian, Francesco Guicciardini. The estate extends over 150 hectares of gently sloping land and includes the splendid villa with its underground cellars. It is located on the picturesque hills between San Casciano and Montespertoli, at an altitude of approximately 280 meters. The geological origin of the land dates to the Pliocene Age, with clay and calcareous formations, rich in gravel, ideal for the cultivation of vines and olive trees. Fattoria di Lucignano farms 40 hectares of vineyards within the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area, and approximately 5000 olive trees.
