San Piero di Sotto
Via San Piero di Sotto, next to Le Corti, leads to the small Church of San Piero, built in an idyllic position on the slope of the hill above the Terzona stream. The 13th century Romanesque structure was remodelled in the middle of the 18th century: the north side of the building was added and a new presbytery and sacristy built. Traces of the original doorway, built with large blocks of alberese stone, are visible on the facade.
San Piero di Sopra
The provincial road then crosses Pian del Melograno. On the left, a Baroque tabernacle with a terracotta statuette of San Piero marks the beginning of a short uphill road to San Piero di Sopra. In 1043 the church is named among the properties donated by Count Landolfo to his bride, Aldina degli Ubaldini. It passed on to the Bishops of Florence, to whom the parishioners paid a tax of four jars of grape must and a pair of capons. In the 16th century the church came under the patronage of the Corsini family, who commissioned the interior’s Baroque renovation and the bell tower, made of an unusual combination of alberese, terracotta and pietra serena stone, bearing the Corsini coat-of-arms and the date 1881.
